Viva la revolución
Semantic habituation describes the process by which a frequently repeated sign temporarily loses its meaning, as the brain categorizes it as familiar and therefore less relevant. This effect also applies to everyday visual symbols that we encounter regularly but no longer consciously perceive. In a similar way, the concept of revolution has been gradually emptied of its original meaning over time, shifting from a radical act of political and social transformation to a term casually used in everyday contexts, such as marketing slogans for “revolutionary” consumer products like washing detergent.
My art objects from the series “Viva le Revolution” engage with this mechanism by combining the politically charged gesture of the raised fist with everyday objects.
